Heyrex Food and Calorie Information
Determining the right meal size for your dog can be complex. At Heyrex, we provide tools to help you calculate your dog's nutritional needs accurately. Our Dog Food & Calorie Calculator assists in converting between various units and understanding your dog's dietary requirements.
1. Understanding Energy Content: Calories vs. Kilojoules
Dog food labels often display energy content as Metabolizable Energy (ME), typically in kilocalories per kilogram (kcal/kg). In some regions, energy is expressed in kilojoules (kJ).
- 1 kilocalorie (kcal) = 4.184 kilojoules (kJ)
- 1 kilojoule (kJ) = 0.239 kilocalories (kcal)
986 / 4.184 ≈ 236 kcal
2. Converting Energy Content Across Units
Dog food energy content can be listed in various units. Use these conversions to standardize measurements:
- kcal/kg to kcal/lb: Divide by 2.2
- kcal/kg to kcal/oz: Divide by 35
- kcal/kg to kcal/100g: Divide by 10
kcal/lb: 3250 / 2.2 ≈ 1477 kcal/lb
kcal/oz: 3250 / 35 ≈ 93 kcal/oz
kcal/100g: 3250 / 10 = 325 kcal/100g
3. Calculating Protein Content per 1000 kcal
Protein content is often listed as a percentage. To determine grams of protein per 1000 kcal:
(Protein % / kcal/kg) × 10,000 = grams of protein per 1000 kcal
(21 / 3250) × 10,000 ≈ 64.6g protein per 1000 kcal
4. Converting kcal per Cup to kcal per kg
When energy content is provided per cup, and the weight of the cup is known, convert to kcal/kg:
(1000 ÷ weight of food per cup in grams) × kcal per cup = kcal/kg
(1000 / 110) × 310 ≈ 2818 kcal/kg
